The Southern Ohio Chapter of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society encompasses a geographic area of 22 counties serving Greater Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky, Dayton and the Miami Valley and southeastern Ohio. Supported entirely by contributions from local companies, organizations and individuals, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Southern Ohio Chapter raised more than $3 million for the 2008 fiscal year. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, headquartered in White Plains, NY, with 68 chapters in the United States and Canada, is the world's largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research and providing education and patient services. The LLS mission: Cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. Since its founding in 1949, LLS has invested more than $600 million in research specifically targeting leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma. Last year alone, LLS made 6.3 million contacts with patients, caregivers and healthcare professionals.
Leukemia contributes to more deaths among children than any other disease. There is a new blood cancer diagnosis every five minutes. On a positive note, cure rates are at an all time high. Some forms of leukemia have a 94% survival rate, well above the 4% survival rate given children in the 1960's. Researchers continue to work to finding a cure. We have never been closer. Programs like Pennies for Patients and Olive Garden's Pasta for Pennies will raise over 18 million dollars that will go towards research, educational programs, and patient aid to families and patients within our own community.
