Brettly, Age 8 Waconia, MN 3rd grade, Bayview Elementary School My name is Brettly, and I was diagnosed with ALC (anaplastic large cell) lymphoma in July of 2008, and I relapsed in January of 2010. I am currently undergoing a stem cell transplant. I love to play wii, play with my friends, ride my four-wheeler and visit my family in California and Minnesota. I love cherry ices from Burger King, cheese nachos, M&M's, Starburst and brownies. In sports, I like Dwayne Johnson and Brett Favre. My favorite show is iCarly, and I want to work at Disneyland someday. I am honored to be a 2011 HERO and am grateful to LLS for raising awareness and helping fund a cure. Brock, Age 8 Leonard, ND 3rd grade, Kindred Public School My name is Brock, and I was diagnosed with ALL (acute lymphoblastic leukemia) in October of 2003. My 3˝ years of treatment was not fun. I remember that it was painful and I had lots of pills and pokes. I feel good now! I like fishing and baseball. My favorite movie is Ghostbusters and my favorite restaurant is Valentino's. I have a gecko named Kevin, a cat named Cecil and a dog named Jackson. LLS answered questions, sent information and gave financial support. Most of all, they are helping find a cure for cancer. Treatment was difficult for the first six months, then more routine. I recently finished my treatments, and I'm full of energy! I love school, playing with Legos and baseball. My favorite movies are Star Wars and Indiana Jones. My favorite cartoon character is Sponge Bob Square Pants, and my best vacation was to Disney World. I want to be a teacher when I grow up. Cole, Age 6 Hastings, MN 1st grade, Pinecrest Elementary School My name is Cole, and I was diagnosed with ALL (acute lymphoblastic leukemia) in May of 2008. I have a port and I take chemo pills everyday. I also have AFOs because the chemo is causing drop foot, so I get to go to physical therapy. I should be cured in August of 2011. I like to play hockey and soccer, and at school, I like Phys Ed. My favorite food is mac and cheese and cheese balls. When I grow up, I want to be a veterinarian. Magic Tree House is my favorite book, and Scooby Doo movies are my favorite movies. LLS has provided my family with lots of information for our relatives near and far away. I had 2 ˝ years of treatment, including bone marrow aspirations, spinal taps, chemotherapy and steroids. I finished treatment 1 year ago and am doing very well! I love dancing, reading, soccer, tennis and skating. My favorite subjects in school are gym, art and writing. My favorite foods are pasta, tacos, turkey sandwiches, apples and fruit smoothies. When I grow up I would like to be a day care provider, teacher or artist. My favorite book is Pinkalicious and my favorite movie is The Hannah Montana Movie. Ellen, Age 7 Larimore, ND Larimore Elementary School My name is Ellen, and I was diagnosed with ALL (acute lymphoblastic leukemia) in June of 2008. Treatment went pretty well this past year. I finished chemo and had my port taken out in August. Now I am in full remission! I love the Air Buddies movies and was given Rosebud, one of the puppies, when I was on a Make-A-Wish trip. I also like to ride horses and read. My favorite book is Bad Dog Marley. When I grow up I want to be a veterinarian and a nurse. Grace, Age 6 Shakopee, MN 1st grade, Pearson Elementary School My name is Grace, and I was diagnosed with AML (acute myelogenous leukemia) in July of 2006. I lived at Children's Hospital for six months for chemotherapy and I am now cured! My family has two dogs, Koda and Duke, and two cats, Sami and Roxie. I love pink, sparkly, girly things! I love playing Barbies, puppies and friends. Being a part of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society "family" has helped us to heal. Post treatment, we enjoy being on the other side and helping others. Jacie, Age 5 Burnsville, MN Kindergarten, Sioux Trail Elementary My name is Jacie, and I was diagnosed with ALL (acute lymphoblastic leukemia) in October of 2008. The first six months of treatment were really hard. I had to take lots of medicines and go to the clinic every week. Sometimes my body couldn't fight germs, so I had to be in the hospital for a couple of days. Every night I take my chemo pills crushed in applesauce, and every month I go to the clinic. I have one more spinal tap left, and will be done with chemo on December 5th. I love Sponge Bob Square Pants and The Littlest Pet Shop. My favorite foods are macaroni and cheese, fruit cups and french fries. I love to learn and make friends, and am really excited to attend kindergarten! Jacob, Age 8 Maple Lake, MN 2nd grade, St. Francis Xavier School My name is Jacob, and I was diagnosed with ALL (acute lymphoblastic leukemia) in September of 2003 and had a CNS relapse in April of 2005. Treatment lasted exactly four years and included many overnight stays for chemo at Children's Hospital in Minneapolis, plus eight radiation treatments for the CNS relapse. I like riding my bike, playing with friends, swimming, and going to different waterparks. My favorite school subjects are music and gym. My favorite foods are pizza, grilled cheese and Cheetos. My favorite movies are Bolt, Bedtime Stories and all Scooby Doo DVDs. My best vacation was to Disney World and I like going to the beach. Being a physical education teacher is my goal. We are blessed to have the LLS for support and to get us in touch with other families going through similar situations. Joey, Age 6 Mounds View, MN 1st grade, Centennial Elementary School My name is Joey, and I was diagnosed with ALL (acute lymphocytic leukemia) in December on 2008. The first year was very hard, but I am now in the maintenance phase and doing well. I like to swim, play baseball, and play with my brother Will. I like coloring at school. My favorite foods are macaroni and cheese, hot dogs and fruit. When I grow up I would like to be a teacher. My favorite vacation was to Disney World, and my favorite cartoon character is Ben 10. Basketball and baseball are becoming favorites too. I like to draw and color. When I grow up I want to be a police officer and a firefighter. My favorite vacations were to Las Vegas and Florida. My favorite movies are Toy Story 3 and Mamma Mia. My role models are my mommy and daddy, and Andrew Kozek, a former hockey player for the University of North Dakota. I started chemo right away and then had a bone marrow transplant. I was in the hospital about 70 days, plus many follow up visits. I'm doing well now, and I'm excited to be in Kindergarten! I love basketball, trucks, tractors and playing outside. I enjoy camping and going in the boat in the summer. We have a dog named Bo and a cat named Kitty. My two-year-old sister, Molly, was recently diagnosed with the same cancer, and she is now undergoing a bone marrow transplant. I received five days of heavy chemo and eight sessions of full body radiation before undergoing a bone marrow transplant in July. I am currently receiving in-patient treatment at the University of Minnesota. I still have a big personality - my mom says that I light up the room with my smile. I love playing with dolls, dressing up and dancing. My favorite movies are ones with Dora, Elmo and Barney. My older brother, Luke, was diagnosed with MDS in 2006, so my family knows how important it is to fight blood cancers. I love soccer, baseball, archery riding bikes, hiking and exploring. I also enjoy going to Twins and Vikings games when I am in the Twin Cities for a doctor's appointment. I would like to be a police officer or a fire fighter when I grow up. My role models are all of the police officers, fire fighters and EMTs who have rallied around me, including my dad. Paige, Age 8 Cottage Grove, MN 2nd grade, Hillside Elementary School My name is Paige, and I was diagnosed with ALL (acute lymphoblastic leukemia) in November of 2008. The first six months of treatment were very tough but now that I'm in the last stage of treatment (maintenance), it's less intense. My last day of treatment is February 3, 2011. I like soccer, golfing and swimming. My favorite school subjects are art, reading and writing. I love Mexican food! My favorite books are Junie B. Jones books, and my best vacation was to Mexico. Rhiannon, Age 8 Rapid City, SD 3rd grade, Zion Lutheran School My name is Rhiannon, and I was diagnosed with ALL (acute lymphoblastic leukemia) in October of 2005. Now I am in remission and feeling good! I loved my nurses, Lexi and Kille, who helped me when I was sick. I like playing the piano, knitting, and helping my dad with our garden of tomatoes, spinach, zucchini, peppers and pumpkins. My favorite person is Mrs. Withee who is a good teacher who continues to help me. We even walked three miles together at Relay for Life. I want to be a nurse when I grow up. I've been in the hospital so much that I know I can really help people. LLS makes people aware of needs for research and patient families. Will, Age 6 Delano, MN Kindergarten, Delano Elementary School My name is Will, and I was diagnosed with ALL (acute lymphoblastic leukemia) in May of 2008. Treatment was long and tough in the beginning and I didn't feel well, but now that I'm in maintenance, it is much better. I don't mind it now—it's just something I have to do. I love noodles, airplanes, cars, trucks, motorcycles, and anything with wheels that goes! I play baseball and hockey. I love to go to hockey games! I like to paint at school and be with my friends and ride the bus. We love to travel to Arizona a lot. LLS helped pay for my medicines that our insurance didn't fully cover or didn't pay for at all, and they gave us lots of support.
