Abby, Age 10

My name is Abby, and I was diagnosed with ALL (acute lymphoblastic leukemia) in April of 2004.  I had 2 ½ years of chemotherapy with many hospitalizations and procedures.  This year, I celebrate 7 years in remission!  I like reading, swimming and hanging out with my friends.  My favorite foods are popcorn, noodles and chicken.  The best vacations I've ever been on was to Disney World and visiting my grandpa in Wisconsin.  My favorite subjects are math and reading, and my favorite book is The Wizard of Oz.  I want to be a librarian when I grow up.   LLS gave us information on what to expect with ALL, school transition information and general support.  "I would like to say thank you for raising funds because it is very important to me because I had cancer."

My name is Akaysha, and I was diagnosed with ALL (acute lymphoblastic leukemia) in October of 2003.  I had 3 ½ years of chemo and nine treatments of radiation, brain blood transfusions and lots of hospital stays.  Treatment made me very sick and I lost my hair twice.  I have been off treatment for the last 3 ½ years, and I feel great.  My hobbies are playing tennis, shopping, and hanging out with my friends.  I love pizza.  My favorite vacation was my Make-A-Wish trip to Florida.  When I grow up, I want to be a chef and own my own restaurant.  I love the color pink.  LLS has supported me on or off treatment.  "Thank you for helping others who battle cancer."

My name is Brittany and I was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma in August of 2009.  I had six months of chemo and 17 days of radiation.  I am now cancer free and back at college!  I am majoring in biology and would like to become an oncologist.  I speak Finnish and like to hike, camp and canoe.  I also enjoy doing craft projects like scrapbooking, knitting and candle making.  My favorite foods are coffee, ice cream, and cute cupcakes.  The support I have received from LLS is incredible.  They care about me beyond my cancer diagnosis, and get to know me as an individual.  "I remember collecting change for Pennies for Patients when I was in elementary school.  What you are doing is making a difference in my life, as well as the lives of cancer patients everywhere.  Thank you!"

My name is Chantel, and I was diagnosed with AML (acute myelogenous leukemia) in May of 1998.  I had chemo for eight months, and I've been in remission for 12 years.  I love school, especially reading.  I love coloring, doing puzzles, building things with Legos and playing with my younger sister Gabby.  I play baseball on a special team called "Dream Catchers" for children with disabilities.  LLS gave us money during treatment for travel expenses, and has helped spread the word of hope and help.  "My mom and I want you to know how very important each and every one of you is and that every penny counts.  We are very proud to be Heroes for this program and hope you never have to feel the pain of a blood cancer".

My name is Griffin, and I was diagnosed with ALL (acute lymphoblastic leukemia) in July of 2006.  I had aggressive chemotherapy at first, and now I'm in remission and living life to the fullest.  I like to ride my bike, go camping, drive four-wheelers and mow the lawn.  My favorite foods are chicken drumsticks, mashed potatoes with gravy and corn.  My favorite movie is Transformers.  My favorite trips have been to South Dakota, Florida, Wisconsin Dells and camping with Grandma and Grandpa.  "Thank you for all that you do!"

My name is Jacob, and I was diagnosed with leukemia in April of 2001.  Treatment was tough, but I am doing well now.  I like football, baseball and basketball.  My favorite subjects in school are science, math and lunch.  My favorite foods are hamburgers, pizza, enchiladas and parmesan chicken.  My favorite actor is Will Smith.  When I grow up I would like to be a child life specialist.  LLS has helped my family by helping to pay for medicine and travel during treatment.  "Thank you for doing a really great thing for kids and their families!"

My name is Madeline, and I was diagnosed with ALL (acute lymphoblastic leukemia) in October of 2008.  There are five stages to my treatment, which will last just over two years.  I'm in the 5th stage now which includes oral chemo at home everyday, but I only have to go to the hospital for chemo once a month.  I don't get as sick anymore, and I am able to do most of the things I like to do.  My favorite hobbies are art, Sudoku puzzles, horseback riding and photography.  My favorite foods are onion rings, potatoes and beef roast.  My favorite trip was to Florida to swim with a dolphin and visit Disney World.  I want to be a photographer, author, illustrator or dolphin trainer when I grow up.  My role model is my mom.  LLS has helped me and my family by funding research to help cure leukemia.  "Thank you for raising money for LLS to help find a cure."

My name is Marco, and I was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma in October of 2009.  My treatment was good except for when I got nauseous.  I'm feeling pretty good because everything has gone pretty well.  I like soccer, basketball, golf, riding my bike, skiing and playing with my friends.  In school, I like science and social studies.  My favorite foods are pasta and cucumbers.  "Land of the Lost" and "Nacho Libre" are my two favorite movies.  LLS conducted a really helpful workshop in Bloomington for my parents.  "Thank you so much for helping me and all the other people who suffer from cancer."

My name is Matthew, and I was diagnosed with ALL (acute lymphoblastic leukemia) in March of 2009.  My treatment was really hard.  There was a lot of medicine, pills, needle pokes, procedures and trips to the hospital.  I am now in the maintenance phase of my treatment to make sure the leukemia never comes back.  Some of the medicine I take now makes me tired and makes my body hurt, but I know that it is helping to protect me.  My favorite sports are baseball, football and basketball, and my favorite teams are the Yankees and New York Giants.  I like playing video games and reading Harry Potter, 39 Clues and Percy Jackson & The Olympians books.  My favorite trip was to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.  I love to spend time with my family and good friends.  LLS has helped my family by providing valuable information and support programs.  "Thank you for helping kids like me who have cancer get better sooner.  I hate having cancer, but knowing I may be able to help other kids with cancer makes me feel better." www.caringbridge.org/visit/matthewbuff

My name is Megan, and I was diagnosed with leukemia in May of 2008.  Treatment was tough, but I'm in remission now.  I will finish my treatment in September of 2010.  My favorite hobbies are reading, writing song lyrics, eating healthy, gourmet foods and speaking in front of people.  I like unicorns, and I'm totally a girly girl!  My favorite trip was when I got to meet Taylor Swift last summer.  I would like to be an architect, nurse, chef, singer, actress and mom when I grow up.  LLS provided a first connection match for my family and child support sources.  "It helps a lot.  Thank you very much!"

My name is Nina, and I was diagnosed with ALL (acute lymphoblastic leukemia) in May of 2007.  Treatment has been tough.  I've developed permanent bone damage (AVN), lots of nausea and fatigue.  I'm going better now and done with treatment as of September 2009!  I like rock climbing, swimming and reading.  My favorite foods are Ramen noodles and Chinese food.  My favorite movie is Princess Diaries and my favorite books are the Boxcar Children.  I like to vacation in Custer, SD, and I want to be a food scientist when I grow up.  My mom and I attended Mission Day in Washington DC where we lobbied congress for cancer research funding.  "Thank you for doing this."

My name is Olivia, and I was diagnosed with ALL (acute lymphoblastic leukemia) in January of 2000.  Since I was only three years old, I can't really remember what the treatment was like.  I mostly just remember staying in the hospital, the nice doctors and playing in the hospital playroom.  I like reading and hanging out with my crazy siblings.  My favorite color is purple, and my favorite school subject is math.  LLS helped me and my family understand my illness.  "Thank you for your generous donation of time, talent and monetary gifts.  You are a blessing!"

My name is Sam, and I was diagnosed with ALL (acute lymphoblastic leukemia) in February of 2000.  I had 2 ½ years of intense chemotherapy at Children's Hospital in Minneapolis.  May 28, 2009 marked seven years since my last chemo treatment.  I am very healthy today!  I love hockey, lacrosse, football, dodge ball and snowboarding.  In school, I like gym, art and orchestra.  My favorite foods are macaroni and cheese, tacos, pizza, breakfast burritos and nachos.  Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins is my role model.  I also look up to my dad.  He helps me with problems, takes his time with things and is fun to be with.  LLS has provided us a way to give back to those who helped me and my family fight my battle with cancer.  "Thank you for raising money.  I appreciate it.  Try to reach your goal."

My name is Victoria, and I was diagnosed with AML (acute myelogenous leukemia) in April of 1997.  I went through three rounds of chemotherapy, a bone marrow transplant and radiation.  Today I am doing well and attending college, but still am dealing with some of the long term effects of treatment.  I am majoring in business and love theater.  My favorite books are the Harry Potter series and my favorite movies are anything with Johnny Depp.  My favorite vacation destination is New York City.  LLS has helped me and my family by funding research and giving us support.  "Thank you for helping fight leukemia and lymphoma.  Every penny helps.  Everyone can make a difference!"

 

Wes, Age 15

My name is Wes, and I was diagnosed with ALL (acute lymphoblastic leukemia) on my first day of Kindergarten in September of 2000.  I had 3½ years of chemotherapy with many hospital stays, kidney stones, spinal taps, neutropenia, ear and sinus infections, seizures, blood transfusions and radiation.  Now I've been in remission for ten years and doing great!  I like to ride bike and play Xbox.  My goal is to be a police officer.  My favorite foods are cantaloupe, chicken fajita pizza and sloppy joes, and my favorite subjects are gym, science and geography.  My favorite books are the Halo series.  LLS helped my family connect with other kids and families like us.  We learned we were not alone.  They also helped with co-pays and education materials and meetings.  "A cancer diagnosis turns your life upside down.  Uncertainty becomes a daily reality.  LLS puts its energy into finding a cure—your pennies save lives."
