2010 School & Youth Pennies Program Working Together Makes "Cents"Come join The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's School & Youth Pennies for Patients® and help make the world a better place! Pennies is a service learning project that incorporates community service in to the classroom. Through community service, students learn new skills, assume responsibilities, become aware of the needs of others and learn the importance of unselfish serving and giving. Community service links students to the wider community and exposes them to people and situations outside their previous experiences. Your students will have the satisfaction of knowing that their spare change made a difference in the lives of people in our community. Not only will you be helping patients and their families stricken with leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma and Hodgkin's disease, but also helping children help others! Every school is a winner, because every student gets a chance to make a difference in the lives of others. How does the Pennies Program work? For a three-week period between the dates of January 19th - March 26th, 2010 students collect spare change in honor of a local blood cancer patient. The donations go to benefit the Society's mission to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. Schools, classes, students, and coordinators are rewarded for their efforts with prizes such as classroom party, gift cards and more! The Society will provide all the program materials needed including: posters, collection containers, a copy of a letter to be sent to parents/guardians, age-appropriate videos, and fun campaign ideas. Each school is assigned an "honored hero", a local patient that is either battling blood cancer or is in remission, to make the journey more personal. Activities can be planned to educate and motivate students, and you can even request a kick-off assembly from the Society staff! Who benefits from the Pennies Program? - All money raised will benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society® by supporting life-saving research and patient aid. The Society is the world's largest voluntary health organization dedicated solely to finding a cure for blood cancers while improving the lives of patients and their families.
- The Trish Greene Back to School Program for Children with Cancer: This program fosters dialogue among health-care professionals, parents, young patients and school personnel to ease a child's return to school after treatment.
Why should my school participate? - Because leukemia causes more deaths than any other cancer among children and young adults under the age of 20.
- Because more than 894,543 people in the United States today are diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's lymphoma and myeloma.
- Because every five minutes, someone learns that he or she has a blood cancer.
- Because every ten minutes, someone dies from a blood cancer.
- Because students of all ages can learn the value of community service and make a difference in the lives of others.
